Designing sheet metal for bending: practical rules and limits

Five general rules that avoid cracks, distortion and rework, plus the limits of our press brakes.

Practical rules (general)

  • Inside bend radius: as a starting point, equal to or larger than the material thickness in mild steel; we confirm per alloy.
  • Minimum flange length: keep flanges long enough for the part to seat on the die; ask for the exact value by thickness.
  • Holes near a bend: keep them farther than thickness plus radius, or they distort.
  • Bend reliefs at corners to avoid tearing.
  • Grain direction: bend perpendicular to the grain when possible, especially in aluminium.

These are reference rules; we confirm radii, angles and tolerances per part when quoting.

Our press-brake limits

  • 3 m brake: carbon steel 1–6.35 mm; stainless 1–3 mm.
  • 5.5 m brake: carbon steel 1–3 mm; stainless 2 mm.
  • CNC bending with TRUMPF technology.
