Handheld laser welding vs. TIG: advantages and limits

When handheld laser welding adds value and when to stay with arc welding.

What changes

Handheld laser welding delivers very concentrated heat: less part distortion and less finishing rework. TIG remains very versatile for thicker sections and joints with gaps.

Where handheld laser stands out

  • Thin stainless sheet and visible enclosures.
  • Parts that cannot tolerate distortion.
  • Production where speed and bead cleanliness matter.

Limits to consider

  • Needs good fit-up between parts.
  • Does not replace arc welding on thick structures.
  • Requires a suitable laser work area and protection.
